Hi name is Nicole Brisco. I have taught for 15 years in Texarkana, Texas.
As a monthly secondary mentor I wanted to discuss unique ways you are using social media in your class to enhance hands on artmaking. I recently wrote an art course for Texas called Visual Media Communications. It is an art based course that seeks to engage students through visual culture. Students are seeing thousands of images daily and make instant decisions based on how the artist engages them through their media. How are we training them to find exciting idea and artists?
As many of you, I have started a personal Pintrest account. The reason I love this site is because it fits art teachers to a tee! Visual images that are posted into organized folders and shared. Shortly after exploring this site I decided to create one for my art room. With approximately 20 folders I can share images with students that would have taken me hours to share in books. As much as I like an old fashioned art book, I have to say this has really grown popular with my students. I instantly saw a desire to search work, share work, and most importantly gain ideas to further their own work. In seconds, I can pin countless images, lessons, college scholarships, artists, and opportunities.
One of the most exciting aspects of this site is sharing with my colleagues. They can instantly see what we are doing in class, find new artists, and techniques we are exploring. In the past it took me hours to email images or create power points. Now I can go straight to the site and be in art educators classrooms around the world. How amazing is it that my students too can see what type of work students are searching in South Africa or Italy OR I can see their art teachers newest ideas.
