A social network for secondary art teachers!
A great place for secondary level art teachers to meet and exchange great ideas, images, videos, NAEA news, and so much more!
The purpose of the NAEA Secondary Division ning is to provide an electronic gathering place for elementary art specialists to connect with others, communicate with educators about best practice in art education, and collaborate with teachers across the nation and world. Please be advised that all contributions are monitored and expected to be in keeping with the purpose. Messages selling merchandise, advertising a company or product, promoting elections/candidates and/or any material that may be deemed inappropriate will be rejected.

Hi! I’m Rosie Riordan and I teach at a surburban high school in the Shawnee Mission School district in Kansas. We have about 1860 students in our school 9-12.
I teach drawing, intro to studio, AP and Portfolio Prep, Sculpture and Metalsmithing/Jewelry. As with anyone at the high school level, I am concerned about taking my students from where they are and moving them along to improve their skills and their passion for their art. The most challenging thing I face is getting students to critically look at their work and not take comments as personal like or dislike for them. I take them through a process of learning how to talk about their art and critically evaluate both the positives and negatives that are present. What I will be discussing and sharing this month is how I work to get my students into the position where they aren’t wearing their heart on their sleeve but can listen and take the critiques to help them improve their work. I hope you will share your own experiences and talk about how you handle critiquing with your students. Happy Art making, Rosie Riordan
